Kitchen Cabinet Painting
From 1950s Preston kitchens to 40-piece Hespeler kitchens with islands, our kitchen cabinet painting service sprays doors in the shop and boxes in place. Large kitchens of 36 to 55 pieces run $5,200 to $7,800 before HST.

Galt, Preston and Hespeler
Kitchener Elite Cabinet Painting & Refinishing paints kitchen cabinets and built-ins across Cambridge, a city stitched together in 1973 from the old towns of Galt, Preston and Hespeler. Each town grew in a different century, so a job in a stone house above the Grand River in Galt looks nothing like one in a 2000s subdivision in north Hespeler.
We have painted cabinets in Waterloo Region since 2010, more than 1,700 jobs, and Cambridge is 20 to 25 minutes from our Kitchener shop by Highway 8 and the 401. That history tells us when a Galt kitchen needs a lead check before sanding and when a Hespeler thermofoil door should be replaced rather than painted.
We serve homeowners in all three old towns and in Blair, with fixed written quotes, WSIB coverage and a 1-year labour warranty.
Popular in Cambridge
Cambridge jobs split neatly by the age of the house: built-ins and refinishing in the old cores, full kitchens everywhere, and melamine or thermofoil in the newer subdivisions.
From 1950s Preston kitchens to 40-piece Hespeler kitchens with islands, our kitchen cabinet painting service sprays doors in the shop and boxes in place. Large kitchens of 36 to 55 pieces run $5,200 to $7,800 before HST.
Galt's century homes often have built-ins beside the fireplace or in the dining room, and fireplace built-in painting usually runs $1,200 to $3,800 depending on size.
Late-1990s and 2000s doors are only worth painting as thermofoil when the foil is fully bonded; lifting foil near the stove means new MDF doors instead.
Builder melamine in East Galt and Hespeler gets a scuff sand, INSL-X STIX bonding primer and an adhesion test patch, as set out in painting melamine and laminate cabinets.
Three old towns
Cambridge cabinets differ by old town because each one was built out in a different era. Knowing the neighbourhood tells us most of what to expect before we see the kitchen.
Galt's core along the Grand River is full of 1800s stone and brick homes, where kitchens were redone between the 1970s and 1990s inside much older walls. Expect oak or painted pine cabinets, layers of old paint on built-ins and walls that are rarely square.
East Galt and West Galt add postwar streets with 1950s and 1960s kitchens, and the east side has newer subdivisions of its own.
Preston sits where the Speed River meets the Grand, and its streets are lined with postwar bungalows and storey-and-a-half homes. Their kitchens are often original 1950s birch or plywood cabinets or 1980s oak replacements, and both paint well once degreased and primed.
Hespeler grew around its mill village on the Speed River and spread north with large subdivisions from the 1990s on. Those kitchens are mostly maple, thermofoil and melamine, often 40 pieces or more with an island.
Blair, the small village on the Grand between Preston and Kitchener, mixes older homes with newer custom builds. We treat each kitchen there on its own merits, since a Blair farmhouse and a 2010s custom home share nothing but a postal code.
Pre-1960 homes
Any cabinet or built-in in a Cambridge home built before 1960 gets a lead check before we sand it. Health Canada warns that homes from that era are likely to have lead-based paint, and sanding it without controls spreads lead dust through the house.
That covers many painted china cabinets, pantry cupboards and fireplace built-ins in Galt and the older parts of Preston and Hespeler. The guidance is on Health Canada's lead-based paint page.
Original built-ins with heavy paint buildup may suit our cabinet refinishing service, where failing finish is sanded back to a sound base before the new coats go on.

Typical jobs
Three kinds of Cambridge job come up again and again, one from each old town, and they show how much the city's housing changes the work.
A painted pine china cabinet and fireplace surround in a stone house near the Grand, lead-tested, primed with B-I-N and sprayed in Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee. Typical range: $1,200 to $3,800, done in place over 2 to 4 days.
A 1980s oak kitchen of about 20 pieces in a postwar bungalow, sealed against tannin bleed and sprayed in Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter satin. Typical range: $2,400 to $3,400 over 5 to 7 working days.
A 2000s maple kitchen of about 45 pieces with white perimeter cabinets and an island in Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore, finished on site in Emerald Urethane. Typical range: $5,200 to $7,800 plus $250 for the second colour, over 7 to 10 working days.
Cambridge coverage
We cover all of Cambridge, usually 20 to 25 minutes from our Kitchener shop. We run down Highway 8 to the 401 and take Hespeler Road south into Galt or north into Hespeler, while Preston is right off Highway 8 by King Street.
Because the drive is short, Cambridge estimates can be booked on evenings and Sundays like any Kitchener visit, and there is no travel charge anywhere in the city.
Paint disposal
Cambridge residents can take leftover paint, stain and solvent to the Region of Waterloo household hazardous waste depot at 201 Savage Dr in Cambridge. For most of Galt, Preston and Hespeler it is the closer of the Region's two depots.
Old cans found in the basement of a century home often hold oil-based paint, and some may contain lead. Keep them sealed and take them to the depot rather than putting them out with the garbage.

Questions
Cambridge homeowners usually ask about old houses, newer builder doors and how far we travel.
Yes. We check for lead before sanding anything painted before 1960, prime old oil paint with B-I-N, and spray the built-in in place inside zip walls over 2 to 4 days.
About 20 to 25 minutes from our Kitchener shop by Highway 8, the 401 and Hespeler Road. That makes evening and Sunday estimates in Hespeler easy to fit in.
Only if the foil is fully bonded. We do a test patch first, and if the vinyl is bubbling or peeling near the stove or dishwasher, we recommend new MDF doors painted to match the boxes.
We stop and talk it through with you before any sanding, because lead dust is the hazard. Depending on the piece, that means tighter containment and HEPA clean-up, or replacing a badly deteriorated door instead of sanding it.
No. Cambridge is inside Waterloo Region, and there is no travel charge anywhere in the Region.
