Salt, Slush and Boots: Why Mudroom Finishes Fail
Mudroom finishes fail because winter brings water, salt and impact into the same small space every day. Road salt dries into a gritty white film that acts like sandpaper, and meltwater sits against the lowest wood for hours.
These are the damage patterns we see on almost every mudroom we quote:
- Toe-kicks and lower shelves kicked by boots and scraped by skate guards
- White salt rings on bench bases and boot cubbies where slush melts
- Swollen bottom edges on doors beside a boot tray that overflowed
- Locker backs rubbed through by wet coats, backpacks and hockey bags
- Chipped edges where strollers, dog crates and sports gear bump the corners
Bare or swollen wood has to be dried and repaired before it can be painted, since paint will not seal water-swollen particleboard. Small split stiles and swollen edges can be fixed through our cabinet repair service before we prime.
