Kitchen Island Painting in Kitchener

Kitchener Elite Cabinet Painting & Refinishing paints kitchen islands right where they stand, on their own or as part of a full kitchen. Islands take more kicks, stool scrapes and vacuum bumps than any other cabinet in the house, and they are also the easiest place to try a bold colour.

In 16+ years and more than 1,700 jobs across Waterloo Region we have painted every kind of island, from small 1990s oak work islands to long seating islands with corbels and beadboard. Most island-only jobs take 2 days and cost $650 to $1,400 before HST.

The countertop stays on, and the sink, dishwasher and outlets stay connected. We mask around them instead of taking anything apart.

What we paint

Kitchen Island Painting and Refinishing Services

Kitchen island painting covers every painted surface of the island: the doors and drawer fronts, the box, the seating-side panel, both end panels, corbels or legs and the toe-kick. We refinish it in place, either as its own small job or alongside the rest of the kitchen.

Island jobs usually come from one of these situations:

  • A scuffed or chipped island in an otherwise good kitchen
  • A new contrast colour for the island, leaving perimeter cabinets as they are
  • A new quartz or granite top that no longer suits the island colour
  • A full repaint, where the island is painted with the kitchen in one booking

If the whole room needs doing, our kitchen cabinet painting service includes the island in the piece count. For a contrast island inside a full repaint, see our two-tone kitchen cabinets work.

Why Islands Wear Out Before the Rest of the Kitchen

Islands wear out first because they are the only cabinets people sit at, walk around on all four sides and bump with everything from bar stools to robot vacuums. The seating side and the toe-kick often show bare wood while the perimeter cabinets still look fine.

The damage usually comes from the same places:

  • Shoes and knees against the seating-side panel at every meal
  • Stool legs and footrests scraping the lower edge of the panel
  • Mop water and floor cleaner pooling along the toe-kick
  • Vacuums, robot vacuums and ride-on toys hitting the corners
  • Hands on the end panel as people round the island toward the sink
  • Cooking grease on drawer fronts beside an island cooktop

That is why the coating matters more here than anywhere else in the kitchen. A soft finish that lasts for years on an upper cabinet will show stool marks on a seating panel within months.

Colour ideas

Island Colour Ideas That Work With Your Cabinets

The best island colour either contrasts clearly with the perimeter cabinets or picks up something already in the room, like the countertop veining or the floor. A colour only slightly different from the perimeter tends to look like a mismatch rather than a choice.

A Contrast Island in Navy, Green or Black

A deep island against white or pale grey perimeter cabinets is the island job homeowners ask for most, and the easiest to live with. Navy such as Benjamin Moore Hale Navy, forest and sage greens, and soft blacks all hold up well beside white.

A Painted Island With Wood-Tone Perimeter Cabinets

If your oak or cherry perimeter is in good shape, painting only the island is a low-cost way to modernize. Choose a colour that stands up to the wood's orange or red undertone: deep greens and charcoals sit well beside oak, while pale creams can look dingy next to it.

Matching the Island to New Countertops

Lay the sprayed sample flat on the slab under your own lights before deciding. Gold and brown flecks in granite push toward warm greens and greiges, while grey-veined white quartz suits navy and charcoal; a shade darker than the veining reads as deliberate, an exact match rarely does.

Island Details We Paint

An island has more exposed faces than any other run of cabinets, and every one of them is part of the quote. These are the details that take the most time.

Seating-Side Panels and Corbels

The panel behind the stools takes the most scuffs, so dents are filled with two-part filler and sanded flat before priming. Corbels and brackets under the overhang are hand-sanded with sanding sponges and sprayed from below, where a brush would leave drips.

Beadboard and Decorative Panels

Beadboard grooves and applied mouldings collect old polish and grime, so they are scrubbed with Krud Kutter before sanding. A fine-finish HVLP gun gets paint into every groove without the heavy build-up a brush leaves in the corners.

Toe-Kicks and Furniture Feet

Toe-kicks soak up mop water and shoe scuffs, so swollen particleboard is repaired before any paint goes on. Turned feet and corner posts are sprayed in the same colour so the island reads as one piece of furniture.

End Panels, Shelves and Wine Racks

Open bookshelf ends and wine cubbies are sprayed inside and out, because in an open-concept room they face the living room. Swapping pulls at the same time? Holes are filled or drilled at $6 each through our cabinet hardware upgrades.

Coatings

Durable Finishes for a High-Traffic Island

The hardest island finish comes from Renner 2K waterborne polyurethane sprayed in our booth, backed by Benjamin Moore ADVANCE on the fixed box. Satin is the best sheen for an island because it hides light scuffs and still wipes clean.

  • Island painted with the kitchen: doors and drawer fronts get Renner 2K, a crosslinked finish harder and more chemical-resistant than any one-part paint
  • Island painted on its own: every surface gets Benjamin Moore ADVANCE sprayed in place, a waterborne alkyd that levels like oil and cures hard over about 30 days
  • Satin, about 25 to 35% gloss: our default for islands
  • Matte: soft looking, but it burnishes shiny where knees and hands rub
  • Semi-gloss: easiest to wipe, but it shows every dent from a stool leg

Felt pads on stool legs and footrests protect a seating panel more than any coating can. Keep stools a few centimetres off the panel until the finish reaches full hardness at about 30 days.

Two-day process

How We Paint an Island in Place

An island booked on its own takes 2 days, finished where it stands with the countertop, sink and dishwasher left in place. The perimeter cabinets, fridge and stove stay usable the whole time; only an island sink is out of service.

  1. Protect the Room

Ram Board goes down on the floor, the countertop is covered with plastic and paper, and fine-line tape runs along the underside of the counter edge so the paint line meets it cleanly. Zip walls close in the island and a filtered negative-air fan vents out a window.

  2. Degrease, Sand and Repair

Two rounds of Krud Kutter Original, then Festool sanders on HEPA extraction. Stool dents are filled, swollen toe-kicks repaired, and the island is primed with Zinsser B-I-N on oak or INSL-X STIX on melamine and glossy paint.

  3. Spray the Topcoats

Two topcoats go on through a fine-finish HVLP gun, sanded at 320 grit between coats and checked against your sample board. We need the room at 15°C or warmer, which is rarely a problem indoors.

  4. Reassemble and Walk Through

Doors are rehung and adjusted, hardware goes back on and the masking comes off. You get a care sheet: gentle cleaning only for 7 days and no stick-on bumpers for 14 days.

When the island is painted with the whole kitchen, it follows the full schedule in our cabinet painting process instead.

Pricing

Island Painting Cost

Painting a kitchen island on its own costs $650 to $1,400 before HST, and our $650 minimum job covers the smallest islands. Where yours lands depends on its size, how many doors and drawers it has and how much detail is on the seating side.

Small painted island in teal blue
Island typeWhat is usually paintedWhere it lands
Small work island, no seating2 to 4 doors or drawers, the box and toe-kickToward $650
Standard island with an overhang4 to 8 doors and drawers, seating-side panel, end panelsMiddle of the $650 to $1,400 range
Large seating island with detail8 or more doors and drawers, beadboard or panelled back, corbels, furniture feetToward $1,400

Repairs to a swollen toe-kick or split stile are quoted per item, usually $40 to $150. Painted with the full kitchen, the island simply counts toward your piece total, and a contrast island adds the $250 second-colour fee.

All other rates are on our cabinet painting price list.

Why us

Why Homeowners Trust Us With Their Island

The island is the first thing people see when they walk into the kitchen, so its colour and finish have to be right the first time.

Colour Consult and Sample Board

We spray a sample board in your colour and sheen so you can see it against your countertop and under your own lights before anything is painted.

16 Years of Colour Pairings

Since 2010 we have paired island colours with oak, maple, melamine and freshly painted perimeters in homes from Kitchener to Waterloo, Guelph and the farmhouse kitchens around Elmira and St. Jacobs.

A Warranty With Honest Limits

Our 1-year labour warranty covers peeling, flaking and adhesion failure from our prep or application. Chips from a dropped pan or a stool slammed into the panel are impact damage, which no paint warranty covers.

WSIB-Covered Lead Painter

One insured, WSIB-covered lead painter handles your island from masking to walkthrough, and a written fixed quote comes first.

FAQ

Island Painting FAQs

Most island questions come down to three things: whether it will look planned, whether it will scratch and whether the countertop has to come off.

Can you paint just the island and leave the rest?

Yes. To make it look intentional, choose a clear contrast rather than a near-match, repeat the island colour once elsewhere, such as a hutch or open shelf, and keep the hardware finish the same as the perimeter.

Will the painted island scratch from bar stools?

Any paint can scratch if a metal stool leg drags across it, so add felt pads to legs and footrests. Our warranty covers peeling and adhesion failure, not impact chips or dents, which is why we steer seating panels toward satin.

Can you paint an island with the countertop still on?

Yes, that is how we paint almost every island. The top is covered with plastic and paper and the edge is masked with fine-line tape, so the paint meets the counter cleanly and nothing is disconnected.

What if my island has a sink or dishwasher?

We paint around both. They stay connected but are out of use while the island is masked, and a dishwasher with a matching wood panel can have the panel painted too.
