Bonding primer and adhesion test
Kitchener Elite Cabinet Painting & Refinishing paints melamine and laminate cabinets in kitchens, laundry rooms and closets across Kitchener and Waterloo Region. Melamine is the material homeowners doubt most, usually because they have seen a DIY job peel off in sheets, yet it paints well when the prep is right.
Doon South, Pioneer Park, Williamsburg and Huron Park are full of 1990s and 2000s builder kitchens with white or almond melamine doors and boxes. Most are square and solid and simply dated, which makes them good candidates for paint.
After 16 years and more than 1,700 jobs, our rule on melamine is simple: degrease, scuff sand, bond with INSL-X STIX and prove adhesion on a test patch before we book the full kitchen. If the patch fails, you hear it from us before any money is spent on the rest.
What we paint
We paint melamine and laminate wherever builders used it: kitchen doors and boxes, laundry uppers, closet systems and vanity bases. Doors go to our booth for Renner 2K, and boxes are sprayed on site with Benjamin Moore ADVANCE over the same bonding primer.

Thicker high-pressure laminate on slab doors, including glossy 2000s fronts. The gloss gets an extra test before we commit, since a shinier surface is harder to bond to.
Many oak cabinet kitchens and maple kitchens have white melamine boxes behind the doors. Those end panels get STIX too, and painted interiors can be added at $45 to $65 per box through cabinet interior painting.
Melamine closet systems, laundry banks and foil-wrapped IKEA fronts such as VOXTORP follow the same method. IKEA cabinet painting lists the lines we test first.
Identify it
Melamine and laminate look alike from across the room, but they are built differently. Melamine is a thin resin-soaked paper fused straight onto particleboard or MDF, while laminate is a thicker layered sheet glued onto the core.
Melamine is paper-thin, so a chip shows pale, coarse particleboard right under the surface, often at the bottom corners of doors by the toe kick. High-pressure laminate is closer to a millimetre thick, and its cut edge often shows a dark line from the layered kraft paper inside it.
Both are usually finished with edge banding, a strip of PVC or melamine tape on door and shelf edges. Banding that is peeling or chipped has to be re-glued or replaced before priming, or it will lift through the paint later.
If the surface is a seamless vinyl wrap that curves over the edges instead of a flat sheet with banded edges, it is thermofoil. That material has its own rules, set out in painting thermofoil cabinets.
Why DIY peels
Yes, melamine can be painted, but only over a true bonding primer. Its surface is a hard, non-porous resin designed to shrug off stains, which is exactly why ordinary primer and paint cannot grip it.
Most failed DIY melamine jobs follow the same pattern: a standard latex primer, a roller and no sanding. The paint looks fine for a few weeks, then lifts at the edges and peels in strips where hands and dishcloths touch it.

Test patch first
Every melamine and laminate job starts with a test patch, because no primer label can promise adhesion on a surface it has never touched. We prove the bond on your own doors before you commit to the whole kitchen.
The test area is cleaned twice with Krud Kutter Original and wiped with clean water. Grease and old silicone polish are the number one cause of peeling on any cabinet.
A 220 grit scuff with a Festool sander on HEPA extraction takes the shine off. We keep it light, because sanding through the thin melamine layer exposes bare particleboard.
One coat of STIX bonding primer goes on the patch, followed by the topcoat in your colour. The patch is then left to cure before anyone touches it.
We score a small cross-hatch through the cured coating, press tape over it and pull it off. If the coating stays put the job is booked, and if it lifts we stop and talk about other options.
Repairs first
Repairs come before paint, because primer bonds to the surface it is given and nothing more. Most melamine kitchens need a few small fixes first, and each one is quoted as its own line.
Minor repairs usually cost $40 to $150 per item through our cabinet repair service. Our warranty does not cover melamine edge banding that delaminates under the paint, which is why we deal with it before priming rather than after.

Pricing
Melamine and laminate are priced on the same per-piece rates as wood: $110 to $150 per door and $75 to $95 per drawer front before HST. The extra prep melamine needs is reflected in where your quote falls in those ranges, never added later as a surprise.
The same rates apply from cabinet painting in Elmira and St. Jacobs to cabinet painting in New Hamburg and Baden, with no travel charge anywhere in Waterloo Region. Every rate is listed on our cabinet painting price list.

Questions
Anyone who has watched painted melamine peel has good reason to ask hard questions first. These are the ones we hear most.
Not when it is degreased, scuff sanded, primed with a bonding primer and sprayed. Painted melamine peels when one of those steps is skipped, which is why we prove the bond on a test patch first and back the job with our 1-year labour warranty.
No. We paint cabinets, not countertops, because a painted counter cannot stand up to knives, hot pans and daily scrubbing the way a cabinet door can.
Most clients keep their existing counters, and painting the cabinets around them is a big part of what keeps the cost down.
Not reliably. Regular latex primer has nothing to grip on melamine, so it needs a dedicated bonding primer such as INSL-X STIX and a sprayed topcoat that cures hard.
It is dry to the touch in about an hour, and doors are rehung after 24 to 48 hours in the shop. Clean it gently for the first 7 days, and it reaches full hardness at about 30 days.
Usually, as long as the boxes are dry and solid. Painting a medium kitchen costs $3,400 to $5,200, against $20,000 or more for new mid-range cabinets in Waterloo Region.

Send photos of your melamine or laminate cabinets, including the sink base and a close-up of a door edge, and we will tell you whether they are good candidates for paint. If they are, we test a patch on your own doors before booking the full job.
