Cost

Cost and Payment

Our prices are published, so most cost questions have a number for an answer. Full tables by kitchen size, per piece and for extras are in our cabinet painting price guide.

What's the average cost to paint kitchen cabinets in Kitchener?

Most Kitchener kitchens cost $3,400 to $5,200 before HST, which covers 21 to 35 doors, drawer fronts and panels. Small condo and galley kitchens start at $2,400, and large kitchens with an island and pantry wall run $5,200 to $7,800.

Is cabinet painting priced per door or per kitchen?

Both: we price every piece, and the total lands in a kitchen-size range. Doors are $110 to $150 each, drawer fronts $75 to $95 and tall pantry doors $160 to $220, with extras like a second colour on their own lines.

Is professional cabinet painting worth the money?

For most kitchens with solid boxes, yes: it costs a fraction of refacing or new cabinets and outlasts a DIY job by a wide margin. The difference is in what you can't buy at a paint store, like a 2K topcoat sprayed in a controlled booth, two rounds of degreaser and a written warranty.

DIY roller jobs tend to chip first at door edges and around the handles, usually because grease under the paint was never fully removed.

What payment methods do you accept?

E-transfer, credit card or cheque. A 25% deposit books your dates, and the balance is due on walkthrough day.

Do you charge for quotes or travel?

Quotes are free, whether from photos, a video call or an in-home visit. There's no travel charge in Waterloo Region or Guelph, and small jobs under $1,500 in Elora, Rockwood or Acton may carry a flat $75 fee.

Time and disruption

Timing and Disruption

Most of the disruption happens on a single day, which surprises people who expect weeks without a kitchen. The day-by-day schedule is set out in our cabinet painting process.

How long does a full kitchen take from start to finish?

A typical kitchen of 25 to 40 pieces takes 5 to 7 working days, with our crew in your home for 3 to 4 of them. Large kitchens of 40 or more pieces take 7 to 10 working days.

Do I have to move out or eat out the whole time?

No. The fridge, sink and stove stay usable except on the day we spray the boxes, so plan on about one dinner out.

Will it be messy, and how do you control dust?

No, the work area is sealed and dust is captured at the sander. Floors get Ram Board, plastic zip walls close off the kitchen, a filtered negative-air fan vents out a window and our Festool sanders run on HEPA dust extraction.

Do I need to empty my cabinets?

Yes, empty every cabinet we're painting and clear the counters before day 1. That's the only prep we ask of you; we protect, label and remove everything else.

How far ahead do I need to book?

Usually 2 to 3 weeks. Spring, from March to June, and the weeks before Christmas fill fastest, so book early if you're working toward listing photos or a family event.

Method

Spraying, Brushing and Coats

How a cabinet is coated decides how it looks up close, and every surface we finish is sprayed.

Do you spray or brush cabinets?

We spray: doors and drawer fronts in our shop booth, and boxes in your home with a fine-finish HVLP gun. A sprayed coat lays flat with no brush marks or roller stipple, which is the point of cabinet spraying.

Are the doors painted off-site?

Yes, doors and drawer fronts go to our shop at 330 Gage Ave in Kitchener. The booth holds 18 to 24°C and 40 to 55% humidity, so the finish cures the same way in July and January.

How many coats of primer and paint do you apply?

One coat of primer and two topcoats, sanded with 320 grit between coats. Dark colours and white over dark wood sometimes need a third topcoat, which is included.

Do you paint the cabinet boxes and the backs of doors?

Yes to both. Both sides of every door are sprayed, and the box exteriors, face frames, end panels, crown and valance are painted on site; interiors are an optional extra through our cabinet interior painting service.

Do you remove the hardware?

Yes. Hinges and pulls come off on day 1 and are bagged by location, then refitted or swapped for new ones through our hardware and soft-close hinge upgrades.

Products

Paint Products and Safety

We name every product on our quotes, so you know exactly what goes on your cabinets and why.

What brand of paint do you use on cabinets?

Doors get Renner 2K waterborne polyurethane, a two-component Italian coating, and boxes get Benjamin Moore ADVANCE or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. Primers are INSL-X STIX for slick surfaces and Zinsser B-I-N for oak and stains.

What's the best paint for kitchen cabinets?

For doors, a sprayed two-component (2K) waterborne polyurethane, because the hardener crosslinks it into a much harder, more chemical-resistant film than one-part paint. For fixed boxes, a waterborne alkyd like ADVANCE is the best on-site choice, since it levels like oil paint without the fumes.

Are the coatings safe around kids and pets?

Our topcoats are waterborne and low odour, and most families and pets stay home throughout the job. They meet Canada's VOC limits for architectural coatings in SOR/2009-264, and we ask that pets stay out of the work area on spray day.

What about lead paint in older homes?

If your home was built before 1960, we test for lead before sanding anything. Older cabinets and built-ins in neighbourhoods like Victoria Park, Cherry Park and Mount Hope can have lead-based paint under newer coats, and Health Canada's lead-based paint guidance explains why it must never be sanded carelessly.

What happens to leftover paint?

We take our own empties and leftovers away. For old cans of your own, the Region of Waterloo hazardous waste depots on Erb Street West and Savage Drive take them, as do Product Care paint return sites at many paint stores.

Suitability

Which Cabinets Can Be Painted

Most cabinets can be painted as long as the surface is sound. Our guide to which cabinet materials can be painted goes through each type in depth.

Which cabinets can't be painted?

Water-swollen particleboard, mould, rot and peeling or bubbled thermofoil can't be fixed with paint. Those boxes or doors need cabinet repair or replacement first, and for lifting thermofoil we usually recommend new MDF doors painted to match.

Will oak grain show after painting?

Yes, some grain texture shows through paint on oak. Clear grain filler smooths it a lot but never completely, as we explain under painting oak cabinets.

Can you paint melamine, laminate or IKEA doors?

Yes, if the surface is intact. We scuff sand, prime with INSL-X STIX bonding primer and test a patch first, which is how we handle painting melamine and laminate cabinets and most IKEA cabinet painting.

Can you paint thermofoil cabinets?

Sometimes. We only paint thermofoil that is fully bonded with no peeling, bubbling or heat damage, after a test patch; more on that under painting thermofoil cabinets.

Can you paint MDF or brand-new unfinished doors?

Yes, and MDF gives the smoothest result of any material. We prime the porous edges twice before the full coating system, as covered under painting MDF cabinet doors.

Colour

Colours and Finishes

Any colour is possible, so the questions are usually about how it'll look. Popular shades with their codes are in our kitchen cabinet colour guide.

Can you go from dark wood to white?

Yes. Zinsser B-I-N primer stops the tannin in oak and cherry from bleeding yellow through white paint, and a third topcoat is added when the dark wood still shows, at no extra charge.

Can you match a Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams colour?

Yes, any colour from either brand. Shop and on-site coatings are tinted to the same colour and sheen and checked against your sample door.

What sheen is best for kitchen cabinets?

Satin, for most kitchens. At about 25 to 35% gloss it hides grain and small dents better than semi-gloss at about 50%, and cleans more easily than matte at about 10 to 15%.

Can I have two colours?

Yes, usually a lighter colour on the uppers and a deeper one on the island or lowers. A second colour adds a flat $250, and our two-tone kitchen cabinets service covers how to plan the split.

Can I see the colour before you paint everything?

Yes. We spray a sample door or board in your colour and sheen so you can check it in your own light first.

Care and warranty

Durability, Care and Warranty

A well-prepped, sprayed finish is tough, but the first month and the way it's cleaned make a real difference.

How long does painted cabinetry last?

Many years, when the prep is right and the finish is a sprayed 2K or urethane coating. Wear usually shows first at door edges near the sink and around the handles, and those spots can be touched up without redoing the kitchen.

How should I clean painted cabinets?

Use a soft cloth with mild dish soap and warm water, then dry. Skip abrasive pads, acetone and bleach, stick to gentle wiping for the first 7 days, and wipe hard-water spots off sink bases before they dry.

When are the cabinets fully cured?

At about 30 days. They're dry to the touch in an hour and back on the boxes within days, but wait 14 days before adding stick-on bumpers.

What happens if the paint chips or peels?

Peeling, flaking or bubbling caused by our prep or application within 12 months of the walkthrough is fixed free: we sand, reprime and refinish that part. Impact chips aren't covered by the warranty, but we can quote a touch-up.

What does the warranty not cover?

Impact chips and dents, heat from kettles, toasters, air fryers and self-cleaning ovens, standing water and leaks, harsh cleaners, and hairline cracks at five-piece door joints from seasonal wood movement. Thermofoil or melamine edge banding that delaminates under the paint isn't covered either.

Why do hairline cracks appear at door joints in winter?

Because solid wood shrinks in dry air. Furnace season in Waterloo Region can drop indoor humidity below 25%, which opens fine lines where five-piece doors meet, and keeping 35 to 50% humidity limits them.

Hiring

Hiring and Paperwork

Checking a contractor's paperwork takes a few minutes and protects you if something goes wrong.

Are you insured and registered with WSIB?

Yes. We carry commercial general liability insurance and an active WSIB account, and we send a current WSIB clearance certificate on request, usually the same day.

Do I get a written contract?

Yes, every job gets a written, itemized fixed quote. If you sign it at home, Ontario's Consumer Protection Act gives you a 10-day cooling-off period, and the province's renovation rights guide explains the rest.

Do cabinet painters need a licence in Ontario?

No provincial licence is required for residential painting in Ontario. Painter and Decorator is a voluntary trade under Ontario Regulation 101/01, so ask for insurance, WSIB coverage and a written warranty instead.

What should I look for when choosing a cabinet painter?

Look for a painter who sprays, names the primer for your material, states the number of coats and the cure time, and puts the warranty in writing. Ask where the doors will be sprayed and whether the crew works for the company.

Who will be working in my home?

Our own trained painters, led by one lead painter from the first day to the walkthrough.

Do you work in condos?

Yes. We book the elevator, work within the building's trade hours, usually 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekdays, and send a certificate of insurance to the property manager through our condo cabinet painting service.

Compare options

Painting, Refinishing or Refacing

These three words get used loosely, but they describe different jobs at very different prices.

What's the difference between refinishing, painting and refacing?

Painting changes the colour with primer and an opaque topcoat. Cabinet refinishing renews the finish on existing cabinets, whether with a new colour, a stain or a fresh clear coat, and cabinet refacing replaces the doors and drawer fronts and covers the boxes in new veneer.

Is painting cheaper than replacing cabinets?

Yes, by a wide margin. Painting an average kitchen costs $3,400 to $5,200 before HST, while refacing usually runs $10,000 or more and new mid-range cabinets $20,000 or more installed in Waterloo Region, before countertops.

When is replacing the better choice?

When the boxes are water-damaged or falling apart, or the layout no longer works for you. Paint changes how cabinets look, not where they are.
