Wood Kitchens Worth Keeping
A tired lacquer refreshed, a stain taken darker, or maple and cherry painted when the colour has had its day. We give you the honest pros and cons of each before anything is sanded.

Woolwich Township, Region of Waterloo
Kitchener Elite Cabinet Painting & Refinishing paints and refinishes cabinets in Elmira, St. Jacobs, Breslau, Conestogo and the farm concessions in between. Woolwich kitchens are not like city kitchens: a lot of them were built by small local cabinet shops in solid maple, cherry and oak, and that wood deserves a careful decision.
So our first question in a Woolwich home is often whether to paint at all. Sometimes a cleaned, repaired and re-coated wood finish will serve you better than colour, and we will tell you which one we would choose in your kitchen.
Our painters have spent 16+ years and more than 1,700 jobs on Waterloo Region cabinets, and Highway 85 brings us from the shop to Elmira in 20 to 25 minutes. Woolwich is part of the Region, so no address in the township pays a travel charge.
Local hardwood
Many kitchens in Elmira and St. Jacobs are solid hardwood rather than veneer over particleboard, because the township has always had cabinetmakers close by. Maple and cherry doors from the 1980s to the 2000s are common, usually under a clear lacquer that has worn through beside the sink and the dishwasher.
Solid wood gives you two good paths, and we can price both on the same visit.
If you still like the colour and the wood is sound, we clean, scuff and recoat the existing finish so the grain stays in view. Going darker means stripping to bare wood first, which takes longer and costs more than paint.
Going lighter on cherry or maple rarely works without paint. Our cabinet refinishing service walks through each wood-tone option.
Cherry and oak hold tannins that bleed yellow-brown through water-based paint, so those doors get Zinsser B-I-N shellac primer before two coats of Renner 2K in our booth. Tight-grained maple takes paint very smoothly, which is why an Elmira maple kitchen often gives us the cleanest painted finish of any job.
Cherry from the 1990s has usually darkened to a deep red-brown by now. Hold a sprayed sample door in your chosen colour against the counters before you decide; it is part of every job we quote.

What we paint here
Woolwich homes work their cabinets hard, from harvest-table kitchens to boot rooms off the laneway, so the finish has to suit how each room is really used. These are the jobs township homeowners ask us about most.
A tired lacquer refreshed, a stain taken darker, or maple and cherry painted when the colour has had its day. We give you the honest pros and cons of each before anything is sanded.
Farm kitchens often have a full wall of tall cupboards for canning, bulk flour and small appliances. Our pantry cabinet painting prices tall doors at $160 to $220 each, sprayed in the shop like the rest.
Lockers, benches and coat cupboards by the back door take gravel, slush and barn boots every day. Our mudroom cabinet painting uses the same hard 2K topcoat as a kitchen door.
Newer Breslau kitchens suit a light perimeter and a deeper island. Our two-tone kitchen cabinet work adds a second colour for a flat $250.
Breslau builder kitchens
Breslau has grown from a small crossroads into Woolwich's fastest-changing community, with newer streets close enough to the Region of Waterloo International Airport to hear the morning departures. Its kitchens are mostly builder-grade: MDF Shaker or melamine doors, a peninsula or island, and grey, white or espresso finishes chosen from a builder's short list.
Most of those kitchens are only 5 to 15 years old, so the boxes are sound and colour is all they need.

| What we find | How we prep it |
|---|---|
| MDF Shaker doors in espresso or grey | Scuff sand, INSL-X STIX bonding primer, then two 2K topcoats; a third coat is included when we go white over dark |
| Melamine boxes and end panels | Degrease twice, scuff, STIX primer after an adhesion test patch, sprayed on site with Benjamin Moore ADVANCE |
| Thermofoil doors on some models | Checked one by one; if the foil is lifting near the oven or dishwasher, we recommend new MDF doors painted to match |
| Builder hinges without soft-close | Blum Clip Top Blumotion hinges fitted at $14 per hinge while the doors are off |
A Breslau kitchen with 21 to 35 doors and drawer fronts usually lands between $3,400 and $5,200 before HST. The full rate list is on our cabinet painting prices page.
Up Highway 85
We take Highway 85 north from our shop and reach Elmira in 20 to 25 minutes, with every village in the township inside that same window. Woolwich is in the Region of Waterloo, so there is no travel charge for any of these addresses.
The township's largest town, with established streets off Arthur Street and newer homes on the south and west sides. Kitchens range from 1970s oak to 2010s white Shaker.
Village homes near King Street and the old mill, and newer houses toward the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market south of the village. Solid maple kitchens are common here.
Newer subdivisions beside the airport and an older village core. Builder kitchens from the last 15 years make up most of our Breslau work.
Larger lots above the Grand River and country homes near the West Montrose covered bridge, many with 1980s and 1990s custom kitchens.
Farm and hamlet homes on private wells, usually with a big mudroom, a pantry wall and a few workshop cupboards.
Jobs we quote often
No two Woolwich kitchens match, yet a few jobs come up again and again in the township. Here is what each one usually involves and what it costs before HST.
About 30 doors and drawer fronts, B-I-N primer to lock in the red tannins, then Benjamin Moore White Dove in satin. A kitchen that size falls in the $3,400 to $5,200 range and takes 5 to 7 working days.
Around 24 espresso Shaker doors primed with STIX, uppers in Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and the island in Hale Navy. Expect medium-kitchen pricing plus the $250 second colour.
A wall of boot-room lockers and cupboards in a deep green such as Sherwin-Williams Pewter Green, with doors sprayed in the shop and the frames done on site. Mudroom banks run $1,100 to $2,600 and take 2 to 4 days.
Sound maple with a worn lacquer, cleaned, scuffed and recoated clear so the grain stays. We quote this kind of job after seeing the finish, since the condition of the old coat sets the work.
Questions
Woolwich homeowners tend to ask about the wood first and the drive second.
Refresh or restain if you like the wood and the finish is only worn; paint if you want a real colour change or the maple has turned orange with age. Maple takes stain unevenly, so going darker is harder than most people expect, and paint is the more predictable choice for a big change.
Yes. Every farm and rural address in Woolwich is within about 25 minutes of our shop, and a long laneway is no problem because we load the doors at your door. There is no travel charge anywhere in the Region of Waterloo.
We take our own empties and leftovers away when the job ends. For older cans in your basement, the closest Region of Waterloo household hazardous waste depot is at 925 Erb St W in Waterloo, and many paint stores take paint back through Product Care's Ontario paint program.
Mostly, yes. The fridge, sink and stove stay usable except on the day the boxes are sprayed, which is about one day; our cabinet painting process shows how the week is laid out.
