Can You Paint Thermofoil Cabinets? A Kitchener Painter's Answer

Sometimes. Kitchener Elite Cabinet Painting & Refinishing paints thermofoil cabinets in Kitchener and Waterloo Region only when the foil is fully bonded, with no peeling, bubbling or heat damage, and only after a test patch passes.

Thermofoil was the smooth white door of the 1990s and 2000s, and it is common in Doon South, Pioneer Park, Williamsburg and Huron Park kitchens. Many of those doors are now yellowing or lifting beside the oven, which is exactly where paint cannot help.

Many cabinet painters simply refuse thermofoil. After 16 years and more than 1,700 jobs, we would rather inspect each door and tell you plainly which ones can be painted and which should be swapped for new MDF doors painted to match.

What we do

Thermofoil Cabinet Painting: Our Service and Its Limits

We paint thermofoil doors, boxes and end panels that are still firmly bonded, and we decline foil that has started to let go. On many jobs the answer is a mix: the boxes and most doors are painted, and the heat-damaged doors are replaced.

What We Paint

Flat or routed thermofoil doors with tight foil on every edge, foil-wrapped end panels and the melamine boxes behind them, all over INSL-X STIX bonding primer.

What We Decline

Doors with any peeling, bubbling, lifting corners or heat blisters. Paint on top of loose foil comes off with the foil.

What We Replace

Heat-damaged doors by the oven, dishwasher and kettle get new MDF doors in a similar profile, sealed and sprayed in our booth alongside the rest of the kitchen.

What We Test

Every thermofoil job starts with a test patch on a sound door: degreased, scuffed, primed, topcoated and tape tested once cured.

The material

What Thermofoil Is and Why It Peels

Thermofoil is a thin vinyl film, usually PVC, heated and vacuum-pressed over a routed MDF door with a heat-activated glue. The result is a seamless, wipe-clean face with no joints, which is why it was so popular in 1990s and 2000s kitchens.

It peels because heat softens that glue. Every time an oven door opens, a kettle steams or a dishwasher vents, the foil nearest the heat warms up and slowly creeps off its core.

  • Doors on each side of the range, especially beside a self-cleaning oven
  • Uppers above the kettle, toaster or air fryer
  • The door and end panel beside the dishwasher
  • Sun-facing doors, which also yellow over time

Yellowed but tightly bonded foil can often be painted, while lifting foil cannot, however good the paint. Some thermofoil is printed with a wood grain, but it feels like smooth plastic with no real pores, unlike real oak cabinets.

The checklist

When Thermofoil Can Be Painted

Thermofoil can be painted when the foil is fully bonded across every face and edge, and the test patch passes. Yellowing, dullness and a dated colour are cosmetic, and paint fixes them well.

  • No lifting at the edges or corners, even when pressed with a fingernail
  • No bubbles, soft spots or wrinkles on the face
  • No heat blisters near the oven, kettle or dishwasher
  • A dry, solid MDF core with no swelling at the bottom edge
  • A test patch that passes a tape test after curing

When the foil passes those checks, we degrease twice, scuff sand lightly, prime with INSL-X STIX and spray two topcoats, the same way we treat melamine and laminate cabinets. A light hand on the sander matters, because cutting through the vinyl exposes the glue line.

The fallback

When to Replace the Doors Instead

Replace any thermofoil door that is peeling, bubbled or heat-damaged. Painting over lifting foil only hides it for a while, and when the foil lets go, the paint goes with it.

The usual fix is new MDF doors, sealed, primed and sprayed in our booth in the same colour as the rest of the kitchen. Painted doors and painted boxes look like one job because they are one job.

  • Often only the doors near the heat sources need replacing
  • New doors can change the style at the same time, for example to a Shaker profile
  • The existing boxes, countertops and backsplash stay in place

Our cabinet refacing and new doors service handles the replacement, and painting MDF cabinet doors explains how new doors are sealed and finished.

Paint, strip or replace

Painting Over vs Removing the Foil

Peeling the foil off and painting the bare MDF sounds like a clever fix, but it rarely works out cheaper than a new door. The foil leaves a layer of glue behind, and the MDF under it was never machined to be painted.

Painting Over Sound Foil

The lowest-cost route when every door is tight. The foil stays as a smooth, stable base, and the bonding primer grips it much as it grips melamine.

Stripping the Foil Off

Heat-gunning the foil off leaves rough MDF with glue residue, fuzzy routed profiles and soft edges. Each door then needs scraping, sanding, filling and edge sealing, which often costs more labour than a new door.

Fitting New MDF Doors

A new MDF door arrives smooth and square, gets its edges sealed twice with primer and finishes better than any stripped door. It also lets you change the door style.

Warranty

Warranty Limits on Thermofoil

Our 1-year labour warranty covers the paint on thermofoil just as it does on wood, but it cannot cover the glue under the foil. That is why we paint only foil that passes inspection and a test patch, and why the terms are written on every quote and invoice.

Covered

Peeling, flaking, bubbling or adhesion failure of the paint caused by our prep or application, for 12 months from the walkthrough. We sand, reprime and refinish the affected part at no charge.

Not Covered: Foil Delamination

Thermofoil that separates from its MDF core under the paint. That is a failure of the factory glue, not the coating, and no paint system can prevent it.

Not Covered: Heat Damage

Damage from kettles, toasters, air fryers and self-cleaning ovens vented at cabinets. A heat shield or moving the appliance protects painted and unpainted doors alike.

Not Covered: Impact and Harsh Cleaners

Chips and dents, standing water and leaks, and abrasive pads, acetone or bleach. Your care sheet lists the cleaners that are safe on the finish.

Pricing

Thermofoil Cost: Paint vs New Doors

Painting sound thermofoil costs the same per piece as any other cabinet: $110 to $150 per door and $75 to $95 per drawer front before HST. New MDF doors cost more per door, since you pay for the door as well as the painting, but often only the damaged ones need replacing.

Questions

Thermofoil FAQs

Thermofoil owners usually want to know three things before anything else: whether their doors are thermofoil, whether peeling can be fixed and whether paint will last.

How do I know if my cabinets are thermofoil?

Look for a seamless, slightly plastic-feeling face with no joints, where the finish curves over the front edges in one piece. The backs are usually plain white melamine, and any peeling starts at the edges nearest the heat.

Can you reglue peeling thermofoil?

Only as a short-term fix. Heat and contact cement can press a lifted edge back down, but the original glue has already failed, so the foil usually lifts again, and we do not paint over reglued foil.

Why do so many painters refuse thermofoil?

Because paint on thermofoil is only as good as the glue under the foil, and no painter controls that. We take it case by case, with a test patch and a clear warranty limit.

Will painted thermofoil yellow again?

No. The yellowing comes from the vinyl itself, and once it is covered with primer and two topcoats it no longer shows. What can still happen is the foil lifting from its core if it keeps getting hot.

Are IKEA doors thermofoil?

Some IKEA fronts are foil-wrapped, and most of them paint well over a bonding primer after a test. Our IKEA cabinet painting service covers the lines we see most.
